Alleppey snake boat race is one of the most famous boat races in the world attracting thousands of spectators from India and abroad. It's usually held every second Saturday of August anually.

A wonderful spectacle with specially crafted boats measuring over 100 feet, rowed by upto 100 oarsmen including drummers accompanied by boat chants and frenzied local supporters- it's truly exciting.

There is a huge demand for rooms in Alleppey from foreign tourists who visit Alleppey to watch the race. As a well established guesthouse Johnson's homestay is always full & overflowing during this time. Johnson's Guest House is listed in all Traveller Guide Books. Nehru Trophy Boat Race - 2010. Johnson & friends organized a motorboat for their tourists to watch the race.
Right up front for full frontal view
Over the last two seasons Johnson organized events related to the race. With the enthusiastic support he received, it's now become an annual event. Precisely, a houseboat, specially hired, will ferry his International tourists to the venue where they will get a full frontal view of the race.

Watching the race from a houseboat is a big advantage as the so called tourist pavilions are usually overrun by boisterous locals who may have partaken of fizzy  liquids before heading to the race.

This year Johnson has decided to introduce a package that includes tickets for watching the race with room placements in Alleppey.

After the guests have settled into their respective hotels or guesthouse, all arranged by Johnson, they are taken to the boarding point for the houseboat at 9.45 on the day of the race. The race starts only after 1.00 in the afternoon. The early start is to ensure a good vantage point to watch the race. Hygienic drinking water and lunch is provided on the boat. There is a bathroom on the boat. (Again a big advantage as the tourists pavilion may not have any - at least not to international standards).  A lot of agencies offer to watch the race off motorboats.  But these do not have a roof on it’s upper deck.  If there’s rain it becomes a problem. The houseboat that Johnson uses has a roof on the upperdeck. (See Photos)

Tourists staying in Fort Kochi can also be picked up by bus at 8.00am and brought to alleppey on the day of the race.

Tourist already booked into other hotels are also welcome to join just to watch the race @ Rs.1350/- per person.
